Moto Guzzi Motorcycles History

The Moto Guzzi story is one of survival and innovation, while becoming what many refer to as the “official motorcycle of Italy”. Founded in 1921, the Moto Guzzi Company has survived war, market shifts and financial difficulties and still remains as producer of motorcycles with a reputation for longevity and a loyal following among motorcycle enthusiasts.

Early Moto Guzzi prototype models were not for the average rider and required both skill and patience to operate. The first production model, the “Normale” was introduced in 1921 and had an immediate impact on the motorcycle world. Unlike the mass marketing of products and services companies enjoy today, world of mouth advertising was the dominant marketing tool of the day. The fastest and easiest way for a manufacturer of motorcycles to gain a reputation was through racing. Still another effective opportunity to gain market presence was found in sales to police departments in Italy, South America and the United States.

Moto Guzzi has been a leader in engineering with patented designs for drive shaft, front fork and other suspension components. Popular Moto Guzzi models of the current era include the V7 series which evolved into the popular Le Mans series. Another very popular release was the California, based on the successful V7 series. More recent introductions include entries into the growing sport touring market with models like the popular Norge 1200 and Breva, based on the California design. The Griso is a stripped-down sport road bike. Moto Guzzi still competes on world’s race circuits with super bike entries such as the MSG-2 Corsa, a 1225 cubic centimeter powerhouse.

Though a series of ownership changes have created challenges for Moto Guzzi, the company survives today. Now under the ownership of Aprilia S.p.A., Moto Guzzi continues to offer bikes of style and performance that reflect its Italian heritage and passion for innovation.
