Honda Motorcycle History

Since 1948, Honda Motor Company has been a fixture in the world of motorized transport. The roots of this enormously successful company can be found in its beginnings as a motor bike manufacturer.

As with many entrepreneurs in post World War II Japan, Siochiro Honda found himself without a job. Post-war Japan had little in the way of manufacturing capability so building anything from scratch was nearly impossible. Along with the manufacturing infrastructure, the Japanese transportation system suffered near total destruction and, like any successful entrepreneur, Siochiro Honda saw a chance to fill a need.

Honda had developed a modest business before the war, making piston rings for internal combustion engines. After the war he sold his business to the Toyota Company. Buying surplus electrical generators with the proceeds, Honda developed engines for use on bicycles. Not long after he developed a proprietary engine design and in 1948 created the Honda Motor Company, LTD. Siochiro introduced the Honda Dream model, with its 146 cubic centimeter, 4 stroke engine and released the Cub model motor scooter in 1958. Both products become incredibly successful with the Cub scooter selling over 30 million units.

Riding the tide of strong sales, The Honda Motor Company came to America in 1959 with products like the Dream Sport and the CB92 Super Sport leading the way. In contrast to the large, heavy Indians and Harley-Davidsons, Honda was literally creating a market for small, fun to ride bikes that appealed to a young market demographic. Honda motorcycles have developed a reputation for reliability, ease of maintenance and economy.

Synonymous with sport riding, motocross and racing, Honda continues to be a world leader in motorcycle design, innovation and style. From popular touring bikes like the Gold Wing to racing-inspired super bikes, the Honda Motor Company has developed probably more motorcycle models in less time than any company in history.
